It gets based on swimming room, not gallons. A lot of people on here recommend 6 feet of swimming room for a lot of the tangs. :happyfish

This is a great fish, I have one myself. They're fun to watch. However they can be stressed easily and some people I know who have tried them seem to believe that these suckers are magnets for problems and issues. The only problem I ever had with mine was when I moved it from a friends. It developed ick slightly. I picked up some enhanced garlic and treated the water. I also added some extra to the food and picked up a particular pellet that this tang seemed to really like( the food had a parasitic treatment additive in it. All this helped clear it up and I have had no problems since. I'll look up the exact brands of the stuff I used for you if you'd like. Not tryin' to scare you 'cause I love this fish.

I have a one blue hippo sharing a tank with 2 horned sharks, blue faced angel, flame angel, literotus tank (Sp commonly refered to as lipstic tang) unicorn tang and a vlamingi tang, clown fish. royal gramma, snowflake eel, scopis tang. Before all of you say "oh $#-!" it is a 500g with a 150g sump with bioballs and a protien skimmer.
I also have a hippo in a 180g reef tank with a harlequin tusk, a scopis, lots of coral and stuff I dont remember.
Just keep in mind sometimes hippos eat coral, sometimes they dont...

Strange, I've never heard of Hippo eating corals. Mine does not. And he seems happy in 6" 125 gal tank. Seems they like lots of rockwork with passages.

the one that is in my 500g tank is there for eating like $600 worth of coral. The one in the 180 dosent bother it. The shark tank is timeout for the bad fish. (no the sharks wont eat them)
