I just added my sand to my 55 gallon. I think i added the wrong kind but I am not sure. I have caribea sea aragonite seafloor special grade reef sand. Is this sand okay?
How long should it be before it clears up? (cloudy)

That sand will be fine.
If the tank is cycled then it won't take long
If the tank is uncycled then it will take longer until the bacteria gets a hold of it and weights it down.
If it was wet and pre cured so to speak it won't take long
If it was dry then it will take longer.
I started my 90 with dry sand to cycle and it took over two weeks for me to see clearly, almost three.

Dang Thomas...that was a long time. I dumped my sand in dry, and it took 2 days, maybe three to be perfectly clear. I was nervous the first day, because I was actually changing from CC. I have a couple of damsels in there and they were looking a little worked over. Everything turned out though.

When I first started a tank with sand the cloud really really scared me. What is really amazing is how quickly it cleared up. In a new tank with the sand added first should clear up in about a week. As I remember you removed colored rocks and added the sand. As others have stated that could take a little longer. But it will still amaze you.

I wound up taking mine in stages which is why it took so long. I added half my sand and waited until I could see again, then added the other half, the the HI dry baserock, unrinsed and it clouded up all over again. Had to wait until I could see again to rearange the rocks and it clouded up again. When ever I could see in the tank I usually took a turkey baster and got the dust and stuff off of the rocks causing it to cloud further. so it was all my fault. Part of the cloudiness is the grain size, I figure I got more of the ootlic style which to me is a good thing.

I have not cycled my tank. This is a new setup. I will wait awhile an let you guys know what happens. I wen tto the lfs to buy 2 maxi jet powerheads and they recommed 2 Hagen one a 401 (think) and the other 200 something (40.00) I told them I would wait and try to find some maxi jets. About the Maxi jets do I need to buy another attachment in than the stuff that comes with it. (what to they stand on?)

i've seen lots of people use hagans and been happy with them. i've never used them myself just because the mj's are cheaper and work very well...as for what they "stand on"...they come with suction cups to stick to the glass...just be sure you get a good seal or they'll fall off and blow your new sand bed all over...trust me this sucks...after the second time it happened to me i secured the wire under the clips that came with the ph's that attach to the lip of the tank so that even if the suction cups fail it won't fall into the sand bed...
