I believe its tands for kevlin, but dont quote me on that one. Im just trying to think back to chemistry class, but kelvin is used as the units for the different light spectrums in these lights you see online. The lower the k the more whitish the light will be, the higher, the bluer it will be.

Well...LR doesnt grow, but the things inhabiting it can grow...And this can be done under any light...and the only thing visible that grows on LS is algea <x3
Do some lighting searches. The best kind of lighting fixture to go with is MH (metal halide), but there are different fixtures designed to promote different growth too, such as pc, vho, t-5, etc. Do some searches, but you can keep anything under MH, and your limitations become greater as you move lower downt he ladder.

can a metal halide bulb go into an ordinary socket

No a MH bulb cannot go in a regular socket you have to have a special balist to make it work.
