I want to add a DIY kalkwasser drip to my system, how much kalk should I use for a 1/2 gal. jug ? And do I use RO water to mix it or salt water?

google "randy's 2 part" and check out the new formula and use part 3A... it's much cheaper than kalk, addresses magnesium, and doesn't provide quite the wild pH swings of kalk or the messy maintenance.

You can start off with 1/2 teaspoon per 1/2 gallon. If you use anything more than 1 teaspoon per gallon, you will just be wasting kalkwasser mix because it will no longer dilute.Mix it with RO water and slowly drip it preferably into your sump.Maybe 1 drop per second and keep an eye on your ph it may rise.
BTW in case you didnt know, some grocery stores carry a product called Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime....Its the same thing as Kalkwasser AKA Lime water.
I get mine at Walmart and its much cheaper.

Last time I was at walmart, Mrs Wages was clearanced for 75 cents for a 1lb container.

Here's a link to a fairly in depth look at dripping Kalk...

AHHHH! i paid $2 more

People look at you funny when you have a basket full of pickling lime and no other pickling or kitchen type stuff.
"So, are we expecting a large cucumber crop this year?"

I felt the need to buy some mason jars so I wouldn't get funny looks.

Don't mean to steal your thread but what's the point of dripping?
I used to do that twice a week (at night). my reading was always fluctuating between 380/420 (good range).
Now I don't do it anymore. I use CoralReef salt. My reading consistently stays in the 400 range.
Any comment?
Thanks

"So why dose kalk? What’s the goal? Pretty much all corals and coralline algae will benefit from a kalk drip. It provides the calcium and hydrogen ions (that turn into carbonate with existing carbon dioxide in the tank) that are necessary for calcification of corals and coralline algae. When dripped correctly, it can provide rock solid test results for pH and, in turn, calcium and alkalinity. Alkalinty, our measure of carbonate, determines the stability of pH. Kalkwasser has a high pH, so it is usually dripped at night (or non photoperiod) when the pH of the tank is low. (Photosynthesis has stopped, so CO2 is high, lowering pH) This keeps pH stable as all of this limewater is being introduced to your tank. If you have a 24-hour a day lit refugium, photosynthesis is never stopped and kalkwasser can be dripped 24/7 as well. I believe this leads to the most stable conditions."
From kip's thread...
https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/f/
If you have stable conditions and your desired results are achieved then you have no need to drip.

not as bad as when you go to the counter with bags of quicklime, arm length rubber gloves, safety glasses, a few shower caps, and garbage bags LOL....not that I've ever done that, but I can imagine.

thats part 3B... sulfates rocket overtime with just using epsom salt, there's a better mix (3a) in the same article in reefkeeping magazine online. The new formula for the whole thing is also better than the old and the new one is covered in this article.

This is true but only will be a significant factor if you are adding it often and not doing water changes.I use it very rarely and usually in small quantities. Magnesium doesn't deplete any where near as fast as Cal and alk. But yes the build up of Sulfate isnt a good thing.I forgot what the ratio is for the mag flake/epsom salt mix but you still are adding epsom with the other formula.
