Although the clicks could be from a multitued of things, if its a marine animal, its most likely a mantis shrimp or a pistol shrimp.... Although if you only heard 2 or 3 "clicks" every once in a while, its prolly a mantis, as pistols usually have 2-4 repeated "clicks" in a row.

LoL, I'm caught up late on here too, but not just on the weekends, just about every night..... or morning i should say. But yeah, just do a search on them and see if you can identify.. im actually trying to see if I can also get an ID for you... you said the outsides of the tail were red, what color is the inside?

im no to sure how to approach this matter though the rock is a nice size and with a tiny bit of work can be removed.now i dont know if i should attempt the power head in the hole trick which did remove a mud shrimp out his hole or a fresh water dip?any ideas ?

Fret not, I have the clicking in both my tanks and it drives me crazy too. I’m pretty sure I have mantis shrimps. Once the lights are out after about twenty minute or so I hear a click….click…. Click… and It goes on for a bout 5 minutes then stops and then an hour or so click…..click…….click……click.
like a well trained dog I grab the trusty flash light and go searching in the tank like a navy seal, to find nothing but some worms, pods and fish running around doing their thing and looking at me like “what’s this dope doing now” but no mantis or pistol shrimp. Your not alone in this.
A lot of reefers have been trained to grab the flash light and search, while the rest of the house sleeps.
damn it there's that click now

Some days ago I saw what I think is a mantis shrimp while the light was still on. I'd never seen it, and I haven't added any LR recently, last time was like a year ago. But when I saw that red thing I remembered a clicking sound I'd heard weeks ago, also during daylight. Now I seat in front of the tank, during daylight, and I always see him!! is this normal? I did the diy trap and nothing, maybe he doesn't come out at night

Got him!!! I put the trap while the lights were on (saw him and laid the bottle near him), but I went to check up on him when they were already off, so I don't know when he got trapped :cheer:

OMG, that is what that clicking is, brand new to tanks and LR. I swear I just heard the clicking tonight. Didn't have a clue to what it was. I'm freaked out as I just googled mantis shrimp and did a little reading. What should I do? I only have two clowns and a lawnmover blenny, with some snails and crabs. I don't want them speared or beaten to death. One dead peppermint shrimp last week, maybe thats what happened to him........

It would sort of explain the whole in my emerald crab... (a tiny whole on its bottom... i thought it might have been the hermits ... hmmm.... <__<)

I'm still wondering if it's a mantis though.. I can't find an exact match on the internet, but the pistol shrimp has claws right? this one hasn't and the eyes are different too

everybody relax .. it's completely normal .. some clowns click .. what clowns do you have and if you don't have any than i guess it's just teh shrimp but I'm pretty sure it's the clowns.. a book that i have says that clowns can sometimes click and grunt

You may have a mantis. Certain types are known to punch holes in the shells of their food and eat it. Me on the other hand have not had any holes punched into any thing, so I have been leaning toward the pistol shrimp.
You can find the traps online, they (the mantis) go into for inspection but can’t get out (so I’m told). The trap itself is basically a tube with a inverted conical end that allows one way passage.
