why when everyone in the post condoned it and the op agreed it wasnt a good idea?? not to mention its illegal and irresponsible to take this animal from the wild w/ the thought of releasing it when ones tank cannot support it any longer(6 months if at all)??

Because Oph said it's your obligation to kill a wild animal instead of releasing it, which is not always the case.

um no because it is wrong period. when people don't plan on keeping any animal for more then 6 months its just irresponsible. and equally irresponsible to suggest that keeping a "wild animal and just releasing it" when presumably one is tired of it or can no longer care for it any more. just "throwing it out there" why do you think certain species(not necessarily sw{yet}) have been restricted?? irresponsible "owners/caretakers."

Wow... I'm not condoning the keeping of these sharks or any other wild animal by average home keepers at all... why assume I am? Just saying it doesn't HAVE to be killed!

i dont know if anyone said this yet but what about all the mussles in the great lakes..there is nothing that can kill them off and they grow out of control..also euromilfoil...type of sea weed in lakes around the mid west that takes over lakes and kills the fish because it doesnt give off enough oxygen...stupid people from asia and europe brought these creatures from a place where they could be controlled and maintained
please dont do it....not only are you risking new patho's into the ocean near your home but you will also kill the fish
just wanted to put it out there

Good point hawkfish, but the fish that was in question would be caught and released in the same waters... And like Oph said, the tank could only house rock/sand/inverts/fish from local waters for this to be safe.

And there was the case of some fresh water fish from asia that was released into the wild in the US that was able to walk on land for short distances, ate everything (plants, fish, inverts, frogs, ect.) then moved on to a new body of water. They ended up poisoning the lake it was in, kiling every thing, and restocking it later with native species. I forget the name of the fish and lake, but it happened.

Poisoned an entire lake ecosystem? Wow that seems a tad bit extreme... lol, unless there was like a billion if these snakeheads...

It was not extreme by any means. It was needed to save other lakes/ponds/rivers in the area. Besides, they basically destroyed the native fauna anyway, which is why it was critical to remove them.

They completely kill off the lake my parents live on almost every year. Washington State wants it to be Trout only for tourist (old men) to fish. People keep putting Small mouth bass in it after they kill it. Over a two year period the Small mouth will get huge around 5 lbs. It would be such and awesome bass and Trout Lake if they just kept dumping in the same amount of trout that they put in after they kill it and just let it be.
A few years back they said they were letting it go and just added trout for a while (the hybrid ones) and both fish were huge. The bass mostly ate sun fish and blue gills.
Anyways it makes me mad because I love catch and release bass fishing in my float tube. Nothing like catching 5lbs Small mouth all day long on a fly rod!

We also have problems in Florida with Kudzu, nile perch, lovebugs={manmade}, water hyacinths, as well as the snakes. There are now lionfish, tangs, as well as others living in the Atlantic off the coast of Florida. These species which do not belong, not only can pass the pathogens that the native species has no resistence to....but also outcompete them and take over since the normal predator for them is'nt there.

Ok. So keeping a Hammerhead from the docks is a bad idea. or at least i would feel too guilty after the above posts :) Where is a good place to buy aquarium appropriate sharks? I will be putting in a 400+ gal tank.

well since we cant give u links just look around at other dealers, alot of ppl sell sharks. bamboos eppys, and cats generally make good addtions to the home aquaria, horns too, but they need minimally a tank 600gals more than u got

Do a lot of research as to the species... Many, many sharks do not belong in captivity.
