keeping substrate white and clean

How do you guys keep your substrate nice and clean? Mine tends to turn green and yellow too easily. I use RO/DI water. My water parameters are good. I dont have a large amount of clean-up critters. Is that my problem? I basically stir up my sand/crushed coral every other day to turn it white again. I shouldn't have to do this though. Any suggestions?

I have a 55 gal and i got a golden headed goby. he is about 3/4" long and can clean the heck out of my sand. i haven't had brown sand since i got him. and the best part is that he only cost me less than $10.... not to mention he is one of my favorite fish to watch

slytsi4,don't do anything while the tank is cycling. If the brown gets too ugly, just stir the gravel a little. What got edited?? STEVE

Drewster,
I agree with krazzydart ... ya can't beat a good clean up crew. I've got the beginnings of a 55 gallon reef going now .. and have identified a few causes of micro algae growth other than the traditional water sources, namely over feeding with cheap flake food that contained phosphates. Once I took care of that, got a phosphate sponge and added several more blue-leg hermits and turbos ... the substrate and entire tank in general has remained much cleaner.
Good luck to you !
Brian
