well, the heater is set at 78 degrees, i figured the lights probably add a couple degrees when they are on. what about at night when they are off? do i need to adjust the heater every time i turn the lights on and off?
i am new at the cube and could use any help available.

Zenway ,
i also have a jbj 12 gallon deluxe - with no heater .......and was having a heating problem also .
with my lid closed i averaged 79 - 82 degrees dailey .......soooo what i now do is open the access hood during the day and the temperature stays about 80 degrees - at night i close the hood , turn off the lights except for the moonlights and only lose about a half a degree's by morning .
i run my lights from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm ( 10 hours ) with the use of a marineland single post timmer - about $10.00-.
possibly to long on the lights on thing - but the temperature stays pretty steady .as for the winter ....hhmmmmmm - guess i'll worry about that when the time comes

If it were me I would raise the heater to 84F and just maintain a high temp for the summer.
If it gets higher then get a larger fan and point it at the tank while the lights are on.
Or, crank up the air conditioning.

How many watts is your heater?
Where are you taking the temp readings (bottom, middle, top)?
Go down and buy an electronic thermometer with probe--best thing you can buy for a nano. Mine gives historical highs and lows--very cool. :joy:

zenway..........
curious about your heating problem again .
what type and brand /watage heater are you using in your jbj 12 ?
where did you mount it also ?
i've been adjusting my lid - open and closed to maintain water temp and it's really getting to be a headache messing with it each day - wanna simplify with the right heater and i think a 50 watt heater is a bit much for our 12 gallon nano's - especially with the light generated heat and all.
general rule i'm told is 5 watts per gallon ....5x12=60 ...watts ....hhmmmmmmmm !!!

I had the same problem with my 24NC. The ambiant is 76 ish with the AC on and tank was at 84. I re-wired my fans, primarily because I installed a ICA (intergrated chill assist). My fans now have an independent power source and run much better. Tank is now around 78.5 without the chiller. Which is a little low for my tastes, so I have them timed to run when the lights come on and go off about an hour before they go off. This keeps the temp around 80 where I like it. Re-wiring the fans is not that hard and I can direct you to a thread on another site. There may even be one here, do a search.
