kill 2 birds with my canister idea?

I get a lot of detrius and particles clouding my water partly because I used fine sugar sand. my sump has a nylon bag and sponges before return to tank.
what if I used one of the new powerhouse fluval fx5 canisters with polishing media and when water is clear run it empty for tons of flow rather than adding more ugly powerheads or even eliminating one?

Im not shure I under stand the questian. do you have a skimmer?

yes,but skimmers don`t take out visible floating stuff as far as i know.

thats what they are made for do you have a blue prefilter uv or any other type of filtration? I think somthing else other than the sand is cousing the problem

Sure. If you want, run the return through a "Switching Current Water Director" or SCWD. You can get them for under $40. I'd keep some ceramic noodles in there to catch big stuff, rinse them in tank water weekly to avoid nitrate buildup.
