Killer @#$@!$$ Brittle star

I purchased a pair of Twin spotted Gobies on Saturday and fell in love with them. They hung out together, sifted the sand together, built a home together and they were my newest friends.:) Then, last night, Sunday night 2 hours after the lights went out (I have breeding clownfish and I was waiting for my larvae to hatch, day 9) I watched my brittle star ever so predatory go by the gobies. It slowly wrapped its arms around the fish and the rock it was next to. And then it happened:eek:   Its central disc slammed down onto the fish and rolled up in a ball. I immediately ripped the canopy off of my tank and dove my arm in to get that starfish. Fortunately it let go of the fish back grabbed a hold of the rock structure. I could not remove him without collapsing my infrastructure so I let it go. I then went to the freezer and got him a bunch of frozen krill to coax him out and also to fill his belly. However, it was a clever one.:) He only reaced out two arms to grab the food and held on firmly to the rocks. So I thought he would be full and happy and leave the fish alone until i could put him in jail. (The sump). I woke up this morning and Yes, They were gone. :( My two new friends ($40 for the pair) were gone and my starfish was surprisingly large looking. It was so traumatic. I want to punish it out of principle by I am restraining myself. Anyone want a Green Brittle star, it is very pretty :) and large :D !

Our green brittle star devoured several firefish and a chalk basslett before we yanked him out of the tank and took him back to the LFS.
Sorry for your loss!

our green brittle is guilty of the same, we have lost count on the number of critters that he has gotten a hold of. now the fish we have are either larger than the star and/or quicker. Sorry to hear of you losses

Well, thank you for the support. It appears from the post that they like to go after gobies and may explain the loss of my mandarin. Not too long ago. I thought it was possible starvation even though he was eating regularly and I saw plenty of pods. I did not realize the green brittle star would get so large. Another lesson learned at the cost of innocent fish. It makes me mad thinking that I got these fish and would provide them a good home, all be it, a captive home. It's a cruel ocean out there.

Sand sifting star fish are peaceful ones to have. I haven't seen my green go after any fish or other critters in my tank. The only time I saw him eating anything is when everyone in the tank was feasting on my cleaner shrimp. But just recently he lost the end of one of his legs.
