I think its a carpet anemone or something like that. IMO a hairy mushroom can't eat a mandarin fish and a shrimp.

Mushrooms really arent softies, theyre called corallimorpharians. Distantly evolved anemones. If the fish was slow or got hit hard enough, it is very possible it could have eaten what it did.

someones clown on here a while back got eaten by a mushroom. None of my mushrooms move fast enough to eat anything though.
To remove it just get a razorblade, and cut it as close to the rock as possible. It will probably eventually start to grow back, if it does just get another razorblade and mutilate it until it never comes back!!!

I have this elephant mushroom....bought it cause I liked the colour...it was PINK! and it WAS alot smaller! Well, the thing is huge now, probably 9-10 inches across when fully out...here's a pic...this was taken months ago...you should see it now! HUGE!
scares me, I just pray everytime I look in the tank all my fish are there, I have had mysterious losses occasionally with not a bone to be found...hmmmm...I just hate to think it is my pink mushroom.

Sorry I dont have a picture yet I need my Mom to come over and take some.It is about 6" now and green with brown things all over it.I bought it awhile back thinking it was cool looking and now its getting scarry. It was about dime sized. I use to feed it silversides and shrimp.I guess I need to go back to feeding it more often. I did see it close up in a ball and when I looked inside it looked like white stringy stuff inside. I thought it was going to puke its gutts out or something.

Near the Los Angeles Nat'l Forest, right? Never been to Simi Valley, but have prolly seen signs on my occasional drive to Goleta. The 101 is MURDER through there at rush hour.
