killing sand? or will it go bad?

hmm....im in a spot....people on my nh forum say they have done it and it has worked for them and everyone here says ditch it......what to do what to do......

I have reused sand, I just made sure I rinsed it really well as in taking small amounts in a bucket, and rinsing until the water was clear-drained it good and let it dryout in a rubbermad tub

Just for the record I never said ditch it.

As long as your friend wasn't doing something crazy like dosing his tank with copper or something before he broke it down you should be fine to just rinse it real good before you use it. The beneficial fauna that lives in the sand bed will not stay alive over winter if you don't take steps to keep it alive. Live rock on the other hand I would never purchase from an un-known source and use it in my tank. At least without killing it, scrubbing it and possibly bleaching it
. And then neutralizing it.
