Just curious.....mine seemed to after the mysis today.
I don't even feed my frogspawn and it's growing like crazy. I've tried different food, he just spit them back out. I almost lost him last month!!! Do to undissolved chemicals that landed right ontop of him. I bought one head that was splitting into two on a Thursday, that very weekend, 3 days later it did split into two. Exactly one week later on Thursday, the right head split again into 2, another week later the left head split into 2. It was looking beautiful and big until that happened last month. I lost only one head luckly and gained 5 little ones around it. I didn't expect it, but I know sometimes when a mother colony is dying, it produces little ones. But now the mother colony is doing well again, fully extended with little ones around it. So I guess it's gonna be huge in a few months. I haven't taken any new pictures, but here's one I took before. :happyfish

I can't find him.

Yup, that's what I saw. I even looked to see if his center disk looked any different and I didn't think it did at all. Also, I did see him maneuvering around really pretty well. The 2 legs he has left are on opposite ends of the disk, which I think helps. Poor little guy...he's been such a trooper this whole time!

It was probably one of these things:
a)It is stressed by something
b)Somethign attacked it
c)a rock or something fell on it, and instead of trying to wrestle the arms from under the rock,it just dropped em.
Other than today to put my barnacles in, my rocks have stayed put. There's nothing in the tank to stress this guy, and certainly nothing to attack it...Could I have done this to him by moving rock rubble around to accomodate the barnacles??? Great...

Nope...you noticed the star missing its legs first thing this morning, and didn't move the rocks until later this afternoon! :notsure:

I had a red linka lose two legs by crawling into the surface skimmer of my Prizm Skimmer. That happened about two months ago and he is now growing back three legs.

Mike- that is a nice looking Frogspawn, glad to hear it has recovered from the chemical drop. Mine is green tipped and I think I would like to get the other two color variations and nestle them all together (leaving room for growth of coarse)for a quite a show piece.
Lisa- I hope you can find your star today. Do you have any meaty food you can get some juice out of?? Maybe the Prime Reef? That and some garlic extreme may coaxe the guy to wave an arm or two so you can get hime a nice chunk of meat. I hope you are able to find him so you can feel better about his recovery.

Off topic but kind of cool....the new LFS that I went to up in New Hampshire this weekend had the best selection I had ever seen. This guy had 8 coral tanks and he is just starting! Not to mention his fish collection, CRAZY stuff. Anyway, Eric Borneman is scheduled to speak there in late Spring, I can't wait!! How cool will it be to listen the the expert (IMO) speak in person on husbandry topics?

Hmmm... I really don't know what the problem could be...
If he is indeed smaller than he used to be, then he is probably starving (
). I am DEFINANTLY not a brittle star expert...Ophiura is though. I think the best thing is look around your tank reall well, and if you do find it, then feed it lots and often...
Oh, and the reason why it may be shrinking is because when Brittle stars are in a time of famine, they actually start to digest THEMSELVES!!! I hope you find it... keep us updated!!

He's my favorite fish we have right now. I don't know if he'll stay my favorite after I start stocking my tank.

I lost my brittlestar tonight...after the lights went off, I noticed him in front of the tank, he's never there, AND he had another leg missing...ugh!!! I scooped him out and he never moved a muscle, geez I feel bad about him

I wish I understood what happened. My other brittle is perfectly fine, elusive, but fine. I just don't get it.

BBB, that's an adorable little fish. When I get my new goby in this week, I'll be sure to post pics of him, well, hopefully.

Sorry about your star. I'm thinking about getting a yellow watchman for my tank as soon as it's up and cycled and everything. If it's anything like our blenny it'll love your barnacles.

Thanks everybody for the replies...I'm bummed, kinda got a lump in my throat, ya know?
On a brighter note though, I found my other brittle out and about and I was able to give him a nice treat. I watched him as he brought the prime reef to his disk and ate it...then I gave him some dried brine shrimp, just to be sure. I feel like I want to spoil him now, but still watch what my water quality is doing. He's grown big and healthy, thank goodness. That helps a LOT!!

Sorry about your star, Mom.
I'm sure it was nothing you did. Try not to feel too bad.
I've been meaning to tell you...sweet avatar!

I'm trying not to feel too bad...but, you know. He's been in my tank for 9 months...he counted on me to take care of him. I think that maybe it was just his time. His counterpart is doing beautifully, he's grown and he's beautiful...hmmm. It must've just been his time, I guess.
Thanks about the avatar...where DID I get the notion????
