Kole Tang, a debate

Hi all, just to settle some arguments and to educate those who do not pronounce it properly. How do you pronounce Ctenochaetus strigosus A.K.A. the Kole Tang? I was/am under the impression it is pronounced "coal-ee", but a few hobbyist I have encountered swear it is pronounced "coal". Anyone know forsure? thanks

I believe it's pronounced coal-ay, (rhymes with olé).

Because I speeka English, and not whatever lingo the Kole tang is derived from, I say Kole Tang :-}

Technically it's pronounced "Spotted Surgeonfish"

According to Bob Fenner and the West Hawaii Fisheries Council, it's 'coal-eh'.

The Kole Tang has a very interesting history from Ancient Hawaiian times. It was considered as "Royal" food and was kapu (forbidden) to be caught or eaten by anyone accept Royalty. The penalty, if found with the Kole, was death so I guess if you pronounced it right or wrong it did not matter in those days, if you were not royalty and eat one the kole had the last laugh
