this tank just went up. I did not seed it with live sand simply because with the fish I am planning I know I will have to manually disturb the sandbed frequently (daily). I only have about a 1" layer. I did not want it to have any filtration purposes, just decoration. I thought about seeding the fuge sand with live sand but I havent. In most cases its a good idea to seed it with live sand. the more live sand you can use the better but wether you use a cup full or a tank full the end results will be the same over time. just if you start with a little bit you wont have the immediate biological benefits like with a 40lb bag full.

I have also used playsand and have had my take up for about six months and have not had any problems.
Although had I heard when I first put my tank up not to use it I probaly would not have.
