Thank you for the great advise and places to see. We would love to make it a yearly trip to Oahu as we find it so easy to get around and just nice to be there too......

Hopefully someone can help me here. But there is a place on the highway from Kihei to Lahina I think called something like Hwy 14???? Not sure but there will be someone here to clarify this for your.
When we stayed in Kihei we faced out the Kamole Beach and every morning infront of our condo there people were snorkeling. Maybe someone here know where I am talking about. Don't know how good it was as we never snorkeled there.

Did you go snorkling in Molokini? I was there last August on my honeymoon. It was great. I saw a black tip reef shark, a manta ray lots of green turtles and a zillion of fishes. :jumping: :jumping: :jumping:

ok just talked to my dad and he said were going snuba at Molokini, and wanted me to ask if the snorkeling at black rock is any good, cuz were staying on kannaplai beach and wanted to know how the snokeling is around their if anyone knows

supalupa...thanks for posting these great pics of your dive trip in Hawaii...My family used to go diving every easter somewhere...I don't want to date myself, but it was back in the two hose regulator days!!! Now I have to live vicariously through my kids who are now taking their scuba cert class in preparation for one of these summer dive camp programs.
Someone asked about snorkeling in "black lava" I have not been to Kanaapali, but I have been to Kona,(about 6 years ago) which is also black lava, and it was teaming with fish not even 30 feet out from the shore.

You can go snorkeling in a few spots between Lanai and Kanapali. Nice beaches too.

molokini crater is one of the best spots I have ever dove in my life!!! The whole entire area is one gigantic SPS barrier reef. It was unreal. If your lucky you may even see a white tip reef shark. Usually when you go to molokini you go there in the morning and then head off to turtle town in the afternoon. Have a great time.

It's a black or white reef shark? I thought it was black.

probablly both, but I saw a 4 foot white tip that wanted to eat my camera.

to me mexico has no thing on hawaii. i have been to hawaii, and cozumel, and i love hawaii. we always went the a beach that had every type of fish imaginable, and the reef was 3 feet out. and went as far as you can see. one time my dad had to come out with a boat to get us because we were out to far to swimm back

Yeah, you got it right....I was a docent at the Waikiki aquarium and that was one of the first things that you had to learn, I worked in the surge/tidal pool area. We had two homes, a condo at the base of the punchbowl (university towers) and another home over in Havi on the Big Island, Actually got to play around on Kalapana black sand beach before the lava reclaimed it. Amazing, it was really black and felt kinda weird to walk on it. if you knew the area you could also sneak out onto the lava flows at night and watch thru the cracks as lava flowed beneith you, you also had to leave a bottle of beer as an offering. If you really want to scare the daylight out of someone, go over to hanama and while they are in the water toss a handfull of pellet fish food into the water around your frinds, the water will just start churning with fish, we used to go over there and do this to the tourist just for fun...LOL... Man I miss the islands, 6 years I will never forget.

im a local boy also, i'm in the water on average 2-3 hours a day, no expecetions. (surf-dive-fish depending on the day) best spots ive dived/snorkeled are:
Lanai- this place is so untouched there was a 5 pound lobster in the first rock from shore (maybe 10' away tops) on the way out to a dive spot we caught a 300 pound marlin, while there we saw a group of hunting lions, along with unbalevable amounts of fish. on the way back we caught a mahi.
makaha & west Oahu in general. - lock your car! tons of fish, clear water and mild conditions.
sharks cove (north shore hawaii), IMHO better then hanauma 30'+ but great fish and great ledges, also protected. dangerous if theres a swell. slightly crowded as its a dive training spot. ive seen turtles, squid and octopi right in the small bay 10-50' from shore
Ive also gone of the cliffs oustside of hanauma, the fish are way more natural, and just as numerous. But the entry/exit points are EXTREAMLY dangerous given the conditions
my folks live in kaneohe bay, the shelfs drop from 2' to 40' topped with coral and reef fish galore...hard to get to without a boat, or a residents access. Aslo a hammer head breading ground, my GF got her net snatched right outta her hand by a tiny shark one night. The outer bay has some really great ledges at the 80'-120' depths. one even has a shot down Zero from WWII. another has a great L shape cave thats open verticly at 80' and horizontally - about 110'
But by far the best experiance i've had is going out at low tide at night with a flash light. litterally a whole new world comes out. ill post pics adn tease you guys soon.
