Culturing lace rock sounds good to me. It's fairly light and very porous. It's already mass produced in varied and interesting shapes and sizes. I'd love more info on this place. Everyone I know of that cultures LR does it in the ocean, I'm very interested in their methods. I live in Cleveland so the gas money to go pick some up would be less than the shipping.

They sell their lace rock, pre-cured, for $3.99/lb. Some of the lace rock that they have is previously live rock that has since died/been killed, so you can still get the look of Fiji without the price.
