i have a spare clip-on desk lamp that holds a 25 watt clear bulb in it...now if i hang it bout a 12inches (1 foot) away from the top of the water so it doesn't heat up the water would that be ok or should i look for another light to use??
any opinions or comments would be great

That lamp probably would not provide much benefit. You would be better off using a 40 watt fluorescent grow light. More light and less heat.

not sure if this will help but i just bought one of the flourescent energy saving bulbs and it is pretty intense and is 6500k. Might be a possibility but i am trying to find out if this will work or not also.

I have the same bulb. I am using it on my fuge and my chaeto is growing crazy. It has probably tripled in size in the last 3 weeks.
