A 55g is much to small for an 11" panther. Please take him back to the lfs or buy a 200+ gallon tank for him. He isn't even halfway finished growing yet. Panthers grow like weeds. He will be pushing 2' before you know it. Please take him back ASAP. Bo

They get two and a half feet long...even if you did have room in that tank, you'd have to put something almost as large as the panther is or he'd eat it. They're shameless in regards to the size of their food. Mine (About 3-4 inches long at the moment) eats comet goldfish almost as big as he is.
However, were I you, I really would look into getting a larger tank or getting rid of the grouper. They're gorgeous, they're very interesting to watch...but they grow faster than any fish I've ever encountered. There's a reason that guy wanted to get rid of it. If you don't get a larger tank, it will very likely die...after suffering a miserable exsistence.

Nolo, if gradually acclimated, figure eights and most other brackish puffers can be acclimated to fully salt water. Bo

we did it real slowly but he loves it. he ate a hole goldfish that was bigger than he was thats why his belly is so big. (was not for him but got ahold of it) does any one know how big it will get?

Goldfish are NOT a healthy dietary item to your fish. They can introduce a number of pathogens/disease that saltwater fish have not antibodies to fight. They will also cause fatty deposits on the liver leading to death. Frozen and freeze dried meaty preperations such as squid, krill, and clam are much healthier for your fish. They will bring out the fishes color as well. Figure eights stay relatively small rarely, if ever reaching 6". Bo

i know about the goldfish but the lfs got 900 to many sent to them so they gave me 100 free so i gave them some and the rest went to my pirannas as a treat. i don't feed them goldfish that often.

That is a rule that was generally applied to certain species of freshwater fish year ago. As pointed out, it does not apply to panther groupers or any other saltwater fish that I've seen in 30+ years in the hobby.

The best way I've found to wean a Panther off live food is to just stop feeding it and provide frozen krill. Groupers are very greedy eaters, and they will not pass up a meal, especially if they aren't getting anything else. My panther was about 1.5" when I got him a month ago, and is now between 4-5" and starting to color up from white to tan. When I got tired of buying him live ghost shrimp, we forced him to eat the frozen krill that the other groupers had no problem with, and he took to it within a day. Now he stuffs his face with krill until it hangs out of his mouth. lol
