Can they be used as a large fluidized sand filter? One i was looking at could hold 700lbs of sand you had to provide yourself ... so would live sand + saltwater work in one made from polyethylene?
Sound should'nt be an issue as it will be located in a "basement-esque" concrete insulated dedicated fish room behind the aquarium. There will be a 280-300g refuge as well as a stuffed 280-300g lr tank, then an additional tank for the skimmer to draw from and a return area to the dt.
I just need to know if this is an acceptable way to create a fluidized sand filter, as styles created or carried by the "aquarium products dealers" I've been researching are outrageous. A nice pool filter, live sand and pump would be a WHOLE lot cheaper. I've seen them made from fiberglass as well.
Just curious if anyone out there has used something like THIS for a commercial sized aquarium? ok, im off to breakfast
Yup, pool filters are commonly used on large scale saltwater systems. Will this be a reef or a fish only? If I recall, though, it just had standard sand blast media in it. I think calcareous sand would be too soft to last long in that type of filter, but I am not sure.
