Do lmb's really eat green hair algae? Mine doesnt seem to touch it and I heard they dont eat it, but why you gonna call a fish a lawnmower if it dont mow the lawn?

Lawn mower blennies will not chew up your pre-existing green long hair algae. they prefer to eat algae that is close to the surface of the live rock itself. You may want to try a UV sterilizer to eliminate the hair algae.

Now using a Uv sterlizer will also zap benifical algae. if you grab a couple emerald crabs they will feed on the long forms of algae. I suggest cropping what long hair algae you have and then see if the LMB and emeralds control it.

UV Sterilizers are a gimmick to me. You could just test your water for the usual signs of hair algae and see whats going on, and eliminate the source. LMBs are hit or miss with a lot of things, as a matter of fact most fish are. So its not a big deal, it will still graze on nori sheets and all that. Finding the source of the hair algae is more important IMO

for what its worth. I had a long green hair algae problem and my water quality was pristene. my local FS suggest the usual phosphate and sulfate removers and cutting back on my light times. all to no avail. I purchase the UNImax filter with built in sterlizer and within 3 weeks had no more hair algae...poof it was gone and hasnt returned since. I dose my tank with DT's photoplankton daily to feed corals for what the UV takes away. just throwing that out there.

I do have 2 emerald crabs and I think something ate some of it yesterday. In the other post percula, I know you referenced the tap water, but honestly...I have about an area of one inch by one inch of the green hair algae. Its by no means a problem yet, but I want to find the solution or the reason before it gets bad like everyone is saying it can.

My LMB doesn't eat the alge he just picks it off and flings it in the water. Very funny to watch him fly around. Funny title by the way
