Are they generally easy to care for? How much flow should one get? Are they ok under power compact lighting? Is $8.00 a good deal for like a 5in tall one?

I would say pretty easy, medium to high flow, compacts should do fine, and sounds like a good deal.

I got mine (6" tall) for $29. So you got a good deal, I thought I got a deal at $29.
