first, is a coral tree a leather? (I don't think so, but need to be sure)
how much room should I leave btwn leathers?

Kenya tree is a finger leather. Christmas tree corals is Genus Studeriotes. Not a good choice. Many leathers do bother others and they grow pretty fast too.

my experience with leathers fighting each other stems from a fiji leather fighting and almost killing my toadstool. when I moved them further apart, the toadstool went back to normal.
and I am about to buy some more leathers, atm I have a leather placed in 3rds in my tank and I am worried when I add more, they will begin to fight

then it can't be Cladiella sp, bc this coral is VERY common. It does sometimes go by the name of colt coral. But it is different bc the structure is different. It is the same coral, if you remember on the thread "fragging the beast"
but what about leather placement?
any suggestions on how close

That was colt coral which are often called finger leathers.
Most leathers are from the family Alcyoniidae. Kenya I think is genus Capnella and colts are genus Sinularia. You can search them. Basicly leathers need medium to strong light and the same with flow. Pretty clean water and dont realy need to feed them but can try phyto, so place them where they have room to grow without contacting anything else.

I have never had a problem with leathers fighting when in close proximity. I have had a Colt near a Toadstool w/o incident, and now I have a Toadstool near a Devil's Hand w/o any issues.

my colt rubbed up against my toadstool and everywhere it touched, it wore down the toadstool.
I guess I will just try this again and see how they effect each other in close proximity.

I've never had two leathers touching eachother though. I'd recommend at least 1-2" of spacing between each.
