Leather toad stool

My leather toad stool has this white stuff all over it. Does anyone know what this is? It almost looks like a powder.

Could it be that you have livestock that disturbs the sand, and particles are settling on your Toadstool?
Also, I have read that Toadstools will shed. While mine has never done this, this is an option.

I would lean on it shedding,mine does this about once every month to 45 days.It looks bigger and better each time it does it!

I want to get a Toadstool so bad, do you find them hard to take care of? BTW, it is shedding don't worry about it, my friends did the same thing.

They are pretty hardy corals. I have 2 and both are thriving under 260 PC lighting.

Will they do fine under 192 watts of pc lighting in a 50 gallon?

Its probably just shedding it does that quite often cause it growing new tissue.

Here is a pic of our newest addition. The rock came with the 2 different mushrooms on either side of the toadstool. THe purple is a tank veteran.
Just after we got it--still waiting for the polyps(?) to extend.

How difficult are they to frag?

what do they look like when they shed? do they actually peel off or what?
mines isnt opening right now... looks kinda like there is a seem down the middle... they dont split in half do they?

When that happened to mine, it ended up dying. There is a difference in shedding and then that white powdery looking substance. Is it shriveld right up? Has the stalk gotten smaller? I had to throw mine out because it started decaying. I left it in there cuz everyone was telling me don't worry it's just shedding.

Not sure about fragging them. Mine came with a tiny baby on the same rock, not much bigger then a match stick. But it disappeared the next day, i have no idea what happened to it, but it was a baby, looked exactly like the bigger one.

I have had one two weeks now mine on wensday both weeks did not come out and on friday it had a shinny wax look on it then the first saterday it came back out have to wait and see if it comes out again tommorow it realy looks nice when it is out has a cooper color.

Here it is with tentacles extended. :jumping: I wasn't even sure what color it was when I bought it as they were not out.
