The DIYed builds that are pretty popular on other forums look pretty promising (more so than some of the fully-assembled fixtures I've seen). If you wanted to go with LEDs then I think that building it yourself would be the best way to go. It would be expensive upfront depending on the size of your tank, but considering you wouldn't have to replace any of them for ~10 years is a big plus.
Give them some time and I think LEDs are going to be more mainstream like halides and T5.
