those are mediocre lenses. BUT if your just starting out. Learning things they will probably do fine. I dont know many people that start out with the expensive lenses.

are they like bad-mediocre or good-mediocre. I would rather have something good but not best. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being best, i would want like a 7 or 8.

i would rate those like a 3-4
something in the 7-9 range Sigma 17-70 is a GREAT lens. I say its Optics match some of the lens that cost WAY more..its kinda pricey if your just getting into this...its around $330 at sigma4less.com
and a tele lens. The canon 70-200 f4 is a 10 and its about $550
or if you want something cheaper I say the Sigma 70-300 APO DG is about 190 and its pretty decent for its price.

i am just starting out. what is the best lens for the buck? i could go thru all those consumer report magazines to find one but i dont have the time.

those consumer report magazines are about as helpful at picking something good as giving a blind person 3 balls and say pick the red one.
if I was starting out. I would buy the 17-70...I actually really want to buy it but it would be total overlap of what i already have so its kinda pointless.
Its a great lens. What DSLR do you have anyway.

on the market for an XT, not an XTi. In my book they are essentially the same for a beginner. Either D40 or Xt. Whihc is better?

I totally agree with the above. 17-70 lens is good for all-around use, good starter lens, not the best for macro photography, but it won't limit you with respect to taking pics of anything else.
It's also a good "learning" lens, figure out what your main interest or subjects are and then decide which lens to get. If your going to be doing 95% macro work, don't bother with a zoom lens, go ahead and get the dedicated macro lens, something in the 100mm range is best

yeah, i am not focusing on just macro for now. Yes i will get a macro lens in the future, but i am not just buying this for strictly macro.

I'm kinda biased, I like my Nikon D40, easy camera to use, simple controls and you can get the complete d40 kits with all the extras, case, tripod, lens kits, for less than $500
This is good kit, even has the 2gb card.

is the 18-55 lens that comes with that kit good? whats it good for? because that 17-70 lens is like 300 bucks, which IMO is a little steep.
ok, the 18-55 is the stock lens. probably not nearly as good as the 17-70.

I own an XT and have friends with XTi's and I also know someone who went and bought a Nikon D40 <LOL...yeah, that's you Max>. There are some pretty significant differences between different manufacturers and between the different models (XT Vs XTi). What it comes down to is, what are your requirements ; Megapixels, LCD screen size, frames per second, ir sensors, etc, etc, then how many of them can you get for the price you want to pay. Maybe even trade off some things on that list??
If you're ready to purchase a DSLR and haven't decided on a manufacturer or model, I'd highly recommend writing down a list of "needs" and a list of "wants" then prioritizing these things to help you me make your decision. I ended up buying an XT (body only), and a 100mm Macro lens at the same time. It was more important to me to have a good macro lens right away rather then spend that extra money for a kit lens. I did end up buying a walk-around and zoom lens later, but I was able to start shooting macro's right away and that was better for me at the time.
In a nut shell, when it comes down to the XT, XTi, or D-40, there are difference. When I was researching before I bought my DSLR, I asked this same question in a photog forum and was given some very sound advice. If you do nothing else, make sure to buy the camera that is based on your budget and needs over people's preferences.
Nikon Vs Canon is a lot like Ford Vs Chevy, they both make some great cars but in the end, it's what works best for what you want to do, and how much capability you can afford at the time. Otherwise, we'd all own an EOS-1Ds Mark III's right? LOL
Good Luck, looking forward to seeing some pics soon.

the main thing i want is picture clarity. But i was impressed with the XT, and i think the image quality difference between the XT, and XTi is not worth all the extra money. I want a rebel XT. Final. However, i got in a fender bender yesterday so i am going to have to push this off for a little bit. i was backing up and tapped the front right corner of a car
new headlight, fender, and bumper. on a new jetta

Nano,
Sorry to hear about your accident, no one was hurt. Don't sweat the timing on buying your camera, the XT's only dropping in price these days so you might end up saving a few bucks.
I can send ya some links I've run across over the past year for Rebel XT's if you'd like. Some of these vendors (US only for me) have some pretty nice sales from time to time and like I did, buy your body separately from your lens if you don't want/need the kit lens right away. I would recommend having one eventually though. Good for an all around lens and for taking people pics as well.
Let me know if you're interested in some of those web sites and I will PM them to you ok?

Canon just Announced the new Rebel XSi today.
