its a hobby..I do some side jobs sometimes for some extra cash with it.
its not like I havnt spent enough already..I got like 4grand already in crap. its just once I get the 1D body..I wont have to upgrade the body for a LONG LONG time.
my 30D is fine. i just want the much more accurate AF, 10fps burst shooting, built like a tank, then i can grow on it and not worry about out growing the camera.

Sorry I'm sleepy, with cheap lenses your f stop will change as you zoom and your light will to, so you then have to compensate with the shutter speed. A fixed Fstop maintains a constant of depth of field and light, regardless of your zoom.

yes but constant fstop lens usually tend to cost alot more. Dont think the OP is looking to spend that kinda money.
the 17-70 is a 2.8-4.5 which is still very good.

As part of the inquiry what in anyones opinion would be a decent macro lens? I started out a but 7 years ago with a minolta maxxium 5 body, film camera. Then the digital SLR's started to really take off, and because I already had a lens for the minolta I bought their version which was simply called the Maxxum 5D. I love the camrea still, but I want a lens that can take some really close pics with good detail. The one I have I believe I have an 18-70 and then another like 70-200 not sure of the exact numbers but thats close. All the macros I have looked at are like $500 WOW... but I dont know enough about them.

well macros are a specific lens.
Made to do that macros.
Some good ones to look into. Tokina 100mm, Sigma 105mm, Tamron 90.
they are all in the $330-350 range on sigma4less.com
ohh i see tokina doesnt make a lens for Pentax.
I wouldnt get anything less then 90mm though.
The sigma or tamron are both excellent with the optics
