I have been talking to my neighbor for months trying to help him find a solution to the dreaded Acro Eating Flatworms (AEFW), but everything we have tried seems to work for a week or 2 and then they come right back.
Who out there has AEFW or has had AEFW?? Have you been able to successfully treat them and save your Acro's??
There has been a ton of research recently regarding AEFW's, but no one has found a solution. Interceptor doesn't work, it only works for red bugs. Levamisole, which is a pig de-wormer, has shown some signs of hope, but the people that have used it said not only did it kill the worms, but it also killed off most of the tank.
I also called the people at Two Little Fishies and spoke to the guy that invented Revive Coral Cleaner. He stated that Revive would kill the worms and the eggs. When the affected coral is dipped in the Revive, you can see the worms come flying out of the flesh of the coral...the coral then begins showing signs of life again, but a few weeks later it's worse than it was before with more worms.
We've tried manually scraping any eggs off that we can see. Blowing the corals with turkey basters. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Others say you have to remove all the acros in your tank and put them into a QT with proper lighting, filtration, chemical stability, etc. But let's face it....how many of us have the ability to set up an entire second reef tank, but just for QT purposes.
In my opinion, there must be a natural predator of these worms and no one has yet been able to figure out what that predator is. Sure people say certain wrasses eat tham, but guess what...none of the ones we've tried have.
So who out there has experience with this?? Who can help us with this aggravating situation??
