my lfs sells these for 2 dollars eacha re they good???? how many can i get?? do they produce nitrates?

they eat algae. they can easlity get caught in a powerhead so you will want to nudi-proof your tank.
how much algae do you have, what is your cleanup crew and how big is your tank?

i am fighting red agae and i gave 3 snails and 3 hermits. i have a 45 gallon tank.

the red algae im assuming is cyno bacteria...... i dont believe that these will eat this. however, you could use some more of a clean up crew like hermits to eat things before they disolve in your tank.
keep up on water changes
dont over feed your fish
make sure you dont have old bulbs
make sure your tank is not right in direct sunlight
and the "red algae" (mostlikely cynobacteria) will disapear
