Wondering if anyone can recommend a good LFS in NY or CT. I am in Orange county NY and would like to visit a LFS to discuss setting up a reef tank. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info. There is also a fishtown-usa in Ramsey NJ that I have driven past a few times. Wonder if they are the same company.
Anybody have other recommendations?

Country aquarium in brewster,ny. is ok but not great. The best and pretty reasonably priced is in westport , ct The Living Reef. There is one in stamford ,ct Reef and Fin, but prices are at least 2-3 times more than anywhere else.
Have you ordered from SWF.com ? Best quality and prices.People are afraid to order online but this site has great stuff.

Hey, I may try the one you mention in Westport, take a day and head up there. I'm in NYC and I can recommend Fish Town in Flushing NY (northern Blvd). I'd order off this site, but the $75 min is a bit much when you don't need that much. This site does impress me very much and maybe someday I'll be able to do some ordering.
PS - this is my first post! Whoo hoo!

I was only at the one in westport one time, but I was very impressod by the selection of corals and the prices. Its not an easy place to find so I would call them and ask for hours and directions before you head up.
I have ordered from here many times and am happy. Also $ 75 isnt that hard to get up to. You will find this board really helpfull. A lot of nice people willing to take the time to help others.Hope you enjoy and learn as much as I did.

Right here is one of the best sources for your information on how to set a reef tank up...we are here to help, we have experiences, and most importantly...we are not here to make a buck like the LFS is...
Research here and abroad from impartial sources as to what you need, want and so on...most things can be had online for a fraction of the cost of local purchases...items like the actual tank are usually purchased locally due to outrageous shipping through common carriers....
Filters, live stock, and all other equipment and supplies are for the most part, far better priced online.

Thanks all for the info. The lfs is for the tank. I am an avid online shopper and very comfortable with purchasing online and will use all of the resources available on this site and others to stock my tank.

That's funny, it seems my post was deleted for some reason. all I did was post the site to two local fish store that don't even sell online. I thought only direct competitors are prohibited. ex-online vendors.:notsure:

Dreeves is right. The prices online for equipment are at least half the price online as they are at LFS. If you need a tank then the absolute best price is at petland discounts. There is one in danbury. For example I purchased a 20 gallon allglass tank for 21 dollars where everywhere else including pecto was at least 37 dollars. I got my 55 gallon tank( allglass aquariums) with a metal stand at petland for 89 . However they and all the other locals rob you on filters, skimmers ,etc. The filter I got for my 20 QT was $20 online and was $50 at all the pet shops.
Dreeves also makes a good point on advice. This is the site to learn the most. Pet stores and LFS will say anything to sell. You can walk out of a LFS with the most delicate or toxic livestock and not even know it untill it dies ,cost you $$$ or polutes your tank. We all made mistakes by listening to LFS. These people on this site give the best and free advice.
Again, when you are ready to order livestock dont be afraid to order online. SWF is the place to order.

I'm not sure if I'm aliowed to post the website, they don't sell things online but I don't want to get kicked off the site.
