Oh man, I would never go back to that LFS again. I had a experience with this sorta thing before. i was at ***** once and was ready to buy a cherub pygmy angelfish. I waited my turn to get helped and go figure the person in front of me wanted the fish. The sales person asked the customer what was in his tank. Sure enough this guy had only had the tank for two days!! the sales person recomended some clownfish, even damsels, but the narrow-minded customer keeped hassleing the sales person and he gave in. People should spend their money on a couple of good fish keeping books.

Nothing new. Many stores have high overhead. Location, electricity, etc... Their main profit makers are additives and accessories. Profit on fishes is really nothing to make a living. Tanks I see prices all over. So some profit may be made here but not many tanks are sold.
Online shops with no walk ins are best to make profits, offer lower prices, and be attended by knowledgeable people. Many of these pick up items hen you order tham. You cannot stock all fishes advertised like stocking toilet paper. Common sense.
That LFS made a huge sale and some great profit on the tank and accessories. Basicly they are not at faut. They are in the bussiness to sell goods.
Thruthfully is that if they told the real facts to those buyers they would maybe lost all the sales or only sold very few items and lost those customers. They would have gone elsewhere to bouy everything in one day. Many people are ignorant and do not appreciate good service and advise.
Take it from me. I run a business and see it everyday.
P.S. I do not own a pet store.

you think all these were bad,
I went to ***** one day and i overheard a salesman talking to this guy who wanted a 100 dollar large red sea purple tang.He was telling him his set-up which was just a fresh water tank. The sales man told him that all he had to do was add some salt to his tank and take out all the fresh water fish and just add in the purple tang. He told him that his 30 gallon tank was fine becuase in the store they kept in in a 10 gallon tank. I started to talk to him and he told me his filtration was just a air stone filter and fresh water gravel. i tried telling him that a salt tank needs to cycle and a fish that was about 6 inches long cannot fit into a 30 gallon tank but he was so determined to get this fish and because a 17 year old kid working at ***** told him that it was fine he trusted. I told him that the fish would be dead by 6 hourd and i just laughed as i left,

Our LFS is great. They talk straight and treat customers right. I guess we are just lucky. As a matter of fact they just donated a tank to a mentally retarded kid my wife takes care of. They gave her everything!! Great bunch of people at Tideline Aquatics in Charleston, SC !!!

Well I haven't encountered a lfs
like that yet and hope I don't, so far the LFS
down here are good. :)

My LFS are great...one chain and one mom and pop store. I tell new folks considering the hobby about this BB when I am at the store and reccomend books first. I may be new to SW but I know how to cycle and have certainly read good info on this board.
They don't have a lot of help at the stores so there is plenty of opportunity to talk with folks who are just looking.

I agree with Trigger 16. Being in your own business is a tough proposition. If someone came in my store and tried to run my customers off I wouldn't call the cops, I'd physically toss him out on his keester!

Honestly dwf! Just because your are in business, that gives you the right to rip people off? Not in my books. Some say that newbies in the hobby should research before purchasing. Ok, but then how about research done by an lfs before going into business. Off course there will be bills, bills, bills. Thats what a business entails. A proper business plan would ensure whether a venture is viavble or not. If they did not do their plans & realize that business is tough or tight, that should not give them the right to rip people off. Not Cool, going bankrupt both in financial and karma banks.

I have nothing but good things to say about my LFS. ITs a little private run business and they really take the time to help you. THey would rather you do what is best for the fish then just buy buy buy. Some of these other places I hear about makes me wonder.

Hmmm... Here's a bad one:
Let's see if you can guess the store when I'm done, hmmm?
I showed up at my local ________ and they had just been getting a shipment. I was looking at the freshwater fish because they order the fresh and salt shipments seperately. I absentmindedly started watching the guy add the fish to the tanks. Here is the mistake list:
1. He just opened the bags and dumped in the fish. Lights stayed on, no acclimation at all.
2. He didn't care where he put them. Clown trigger goes in first, next goes in a bag of snails and then a bag of hermit crabs.
3. Several fish that I could see had disease; it was easy to tell even from a distance. He put them in tanks with healthy fish.
4. He apparently decided to make a "tang tank"... this involved putting ONE member of several tang species into a tank together.
5. After being unsuccessful at catching a few damselfish with a net IN THE BAG, he reached in and grabbed them one at a time with his bare hand and tossed them into a tank from about three feet away. One missed, and he merely bent over, picked it up, and tossed it again!
I pointed out all of his mistakes, (or tried to)and he told me that he would see to it that they were fixed. I came back the next day and... you guessed it. He had done nothing. The "tang tank" was a sad sight, several large tangs had torn each other apart, and of course none of the snails or hermets survived the triggerfish.
Now, guess which store this was! I'll bet you can!
