Lfs Sucks

I just thought id share something that i feel is ridiculous. I was at the pet store today when a lil boy walks in with his mom and asks about a 70 dollar clown trigger the clown is 2 inch. He tells the worker there that it is going into a 10 gallon tank the guy says ok but it might grow out of it. The boy says oh in how long the guy says dont worry about it probaly in l ike 5 years that was the first lie 2nd. As he is paying for the small trigger he is asked by the worker is there anything else in the tank he says yes a 6 inch undulatd trigger the guy looks around first then say ok it will be fine but theres no guarntees so if it dies theres no refunds . The kid says ok and the mother had no idea wat was going on. As they were leaving i told them wat was gonna happen but the kid was so happy about the fish and the mom thought the Lfs wouldnt lie so she was just like ok ok i guess we will give it a try anyway. Wonder wat happen. geez thats prettylow screwing a 10 year old

I know exactly where you are comming from. Pet*o tried to get me to buy a blue lined trigger for my 50 gallon reef. Good thing I actualy knew a thing about triggers, expecialy blue lined.

It is an unfortunate thing that alot of pet stores don't look at the big picture. They just want our money. They don't give a Rats A$* about what happens to the peoples tank or the other inhabitants of it. Just as long as they make a buck.
But everyone out there has seen/heard of this. On that same line , we all know the good stores, where the people know what they are talking about and don't what to sell people something that is going to destroy everything in the tank. I part time at a LFS and i have always tried to be true to the customer when they want something that will not go in there tank, all of the employees there are the same way. We try to maintain that good rep. :) even if it means loosing a sale.
Just may 2cents. I guess i had to defens them a little since i work for one. :D

I was at a store I will simply refer to as "Death-Co"....
They got in their new shipment of fish and the employee had a friend visiting I guess. He was telling his friend about how he "conditions" all the fish by putting them in a 50% solution of Rid-Ick to get rid of disease. He described it as "like super concentrated" (honest to god!) My friend and I just walked out and busted out laughing in the parking lot. Needless to say I don't buy from them.
I'ts no wonder half their fish die.

 I would be mad not only at the pet store but at the mother too for not listening and not caring what you have to say. You should have bought her a book and asked her to read it (like she really would, SOME PEOPLE!) Boy, it pisses me off, these people. These are living creatures! Ok, I'll back off before I start teaching some of ya'll younger members new words. But, boy that does make me MAD.

It's the same story over and over. Careless LFS', with careless employees only looking for a buck. I lost thousands starting out because of an LFS in Greensboro, NC. Then I met an honest LFS owner. Then I worked in one. I get most of my advice off here though.
The aquarist who claims to know everything about the hobby is only fooling himself. You can never learn too much about this.

I think the worst must have been when I went to an lfs a little drive from here- and the owner told me a) anyone can put and keep a tang in a 12 gallon and b) when I told her that this site was what I read and that I didn't think that was a good idea, she told me that I must be crazy to listen to a place full of idiots. *sigh* I guess it's back to the long drive to Aquarium World for me.

Lil buddy, James....
Yeah, I still pick up some stuff when I go up to the boro. I am down in atlanta now, but go up there all the time.
Aquamains is the one that really screwed me. They told me I could stock whatever I wanted in my tanks. They never gave me good advice. But, I was new to the hobby and didnt think to learn it on my own. So I kept throwing all these cool things in that shouldnt have gone together. i would go in and complain, they would say "oh this is why" and offer me some bs fix that usually screwed things up more. It cost me thousands trying to fix it, going back and forth. Then I got discouraged and almost quite the hobby.
But then my friend told me about a place near UNCG, called Marine Ecosystems. I went in with a notebook and met the owner, Rich. He and another guy run it. I told him "if you steer me right, i promise I will buy all my stuff here as long as I am in greensboro." Sure enough, they guy was straight up, honest, and cut nice deals. He keeps mostly reef stock, but will get in whatever you ask for. And he is a wealth of knowledge. He has moved from South Mendenhall Street over by Wahoos Bar. Look him up on marineecoystems.com I am not sure if there are two e's or not though. There are two other places. One is in Friendly center. Regular petstore. Not much on advice, but they have some nice stock in occasionally. The other place I cant remember the name. Overpriced though.
He caught a couple of employees from aquamains trying to drop pennies in other LFS stores' tanks. They were trying to get the copper to kill everything off. Aquamains is semi ok only if you know what you want, and how to maintain it. Their advice is horrible, their stock is often diseased. A lot of their stuff is caught with cyanide. I went through three clown triggers from them simply because they were full of

. I have a lot of animosity towards them.
There is one HUGE store I hear of in Raleigh. I have never been there. But, I notice a lot of the huge places just blow smoke up your a$$. You have to go in with your own smarts. I have gotten a lot of good advice from this board. Sharks know a lot on here and are very helpful. This has been a wealth of knowledge. Now I go to the LFS and already know what I want. I let the salesperson talk away. I just sit there thinking "you are so full of it." I never let them know how much I know. That way I can tell if they are full of it. After that, I consider them untrustworthy.
