About a month ago my family received a gift a $168 saltwater light from another family member. On 10/12/08 we decided to return it b/c we had other more important things to get instead of the light. We went to ***** in Bloomington, IL and they stated it was not theirs but it was PREMIUM PET SUPPLY'S. Since we didn't have the receipt b/c it was a gift I called and asked if this was ok to return. Person on the phone said yes. So light was returned and we got the other items we needed and ended up still having a credit of $35. So the following day 10/13/08 we went back to use it. Once at the check out the store owner who we don't know at all checked us out told us we had an add'l charge of approx $13 so I gave him a $20. The owner then walked around the counter and told us that the light we returned was never sold and he knows it was stolen and expects us to return all items we got. PLUS he would not give us back our $20 and kept threating to call the cops on us! We ended up leaving because we were busy! What should i do?

call the police. have them sort it out.
the LFS can say whatever they want but they will have to prove this actual item is stolen before demanding you return anything. the police are there for a reason. its a two way sword dont let the LFS intimidate you if you know that the light was purchased for you there should be no problems.

Well I don't want to accuse the family member of anything but I would first be sure they purchased it. Then try to get a receipt from them or a cashed check or card statement assuming that they did not pay cash. Then if you have the proof its time to go back tot he store and seek retribution for their embarrising and offensive accusations. Assuming they try to tell you they don't care or something like that I am sure the corporate offices (if they have them) would love to hear how their customer's are treated and if not I am sure a local news organization would love a story like that.

I did contact an attorney and they said it would just cost more than its worth. i cant let this guy just get away with falsely accusing me in front of everyone. it was so embarrassing!

Dunno, when you left the store you kinda put doubt on your credibility with the cops. I'd still call them and see what they say.

Ask her for the receipt.
No kidding, you could go back and shove the receipt up the guy's nose.
Is it possible one of the employee gave your MIL a "deal" for cash? I know someone who had that happen with a TV and they never had a clue until they went back to buy a VCR ( shows how long ago that was) a couple months later and asked about the big cash discounts and if they were available for VCR's too. Turns out the guy had ripped the store of pretty good.

I would not trust that ***** from so called Premuim Pet in Bloomington as far as I could Throw his BUTT out the door. If you are wanting QUALITY from a LFS in the Bloomington Normal Area go to Marine Aquatics instead they are off of College Ave there and Sam NEVER SOLD ME A BAD FISH IN ALL THE TIME I SHOPPED THERE IN 15 YEARS. He is honest and while he may not have the hottest and nicest set ups however whe will order and get you anything you want and will match ANY INTERNET PRICE OUT THERE ON PUMPS ADN SUCH IF POSSIBLE,.

oh, I see. I'm not sure what to tell you, personally if I had the time, I'd get the receipt from your inlaw, and walk back in there, while they are busy and make a big scene, demand your $$ that he has stolen, and when things get testy let him call the cops. Might as well have some fun with it.

Well we finally spoke to the officer that the owner from PPS called. We explained the whole situation and how we are being accused for something we would NEVER do. He was very understanding and stated that he would be speaking w/ him to come to some solution. But if we don't hear from him tonight he stated that we won't hear from him for approx 2 weeks b/c he will be on vacation. Hopefully this jerk of an owner learns a lesson b/c we learned PREMIUM PET SUPPLY SUCKS!!!!

As stated before you need to GET THE RECEIPT from your mil.
With out it everything is hearsay and not much can be done legally .
