Life Sucks....

Hello all...just got back from my 4 week holiday today and my tank is gone...i left some friends of my mom ,who where housesitting for us, look after the tank. They were confident that they could manage so i thought they could...turned out the didn't know stuff all and had to call in professional help from my good friend Adriaan, he didn't get called soon enough and by the time he'd gotten the tank on track again everything was bleached and dead and the only survivors where the fish, my clam (if it died i wouldve given up my tank) and my 'shrooms... and now my dads being a bliksem and wont let me spend MY money on getting my tank back to its prior self... Adriaan offered to help me with some free frags so help get my SPS colony started again...but i can't get a Goniopora for free...or a leather or a hammer or any of my other corals.... so im stuffed...my dads being a f*** and ses he know about fishtanks when hes about as knoweleble as my 4 year old cousin...AAAAAAAA..... my parents are giving my shite about my tank.... no sympathy for losing my tank, just getting shouted at.... they really dont care... well sorry bout this but i had to let it out somehow....no sympathy from my parents....maybe some from fellow fishkeepers who have suffered aswell.... thanks for listening... i feel a bit better now...

Well, sorry bout that.
. i know about parents like that. My dad is the same way but he ususally has trust in me. Well maybe you could just wait a while and then start the other corals again.

I can relate - last summer my husband had to go to india for work for 1.5 months when he got back I had the brilliant idea of doing a family vacation so I picked him up at the airport and we took off for 10 days leaving my tank in the hands of my friend.
Sadly she also had no idea what she was doing and we came home to a 110 gallon graveyard - everything was gone.
On the bright side I was able to spend my money to get the tank back on track but only after many many days of crying - and wishing my vodoo doll really worked!
sorry for your losses - and hopefully if you slowly add to it they wont even notice the new additions
good luck

Sorry for all your losses. I've been a little weary about going on my next vacation for 2 weeks. The house sitter (my neighbor) has gone scuba diving and knows quite a bit about these corals and fish, but no experience with aquariums.
Lamaface and NW2SLTFSH, what was it that the tank-sitters did wrong?

That is my worst nightmare. I feel so bad for you but at least your fish and clam and some stuff are ok. Carrie

The tank sitter did nothing - including leaving a Dead fish in the tank to fester with a FOWLR wth aggressive fish (puffers and triggers) to clean it - the nitrate level went through the roof -- then appaently a power surge occured and she never thought to check to see if all filters were running - so bye bye fishes --
but on the bright side - I now have a much happier and prettier reef - and a friend that feels very guilty so will do stupid things when I make her feel bad
All the fish were purchased at a large size so the least expensive one was 120.00

I guess i got lucky. We went on a 4 week vac last summer, and my cousins daughter who is 17 can over to feed my fish. I had no problems at all. I left her water for top off, and food to feed, with instructions to count fish.

Recently had a loss myself, I feel your pain my friend

Keep an eye on your heaters, if they short in the ON position your water will get very hot!

Poor fishes boiled over the weekend in my work tank.

I completely understand your feelings. However, I am sure that your parents are just looking out for you. I assume your a teenager, since you still live with your parents. I am sure that your parents priorities are different than yours. I am sure they are looking out for you in your best interest. Maybe they feel that your money shhould be sent saving for your future, instead of your tank. You should not get mad at them, they love you. If I was you I would let things cool down. Usually Parents give in so, I would not fuss over this and try again in a few weeks. Good luck on recreating your tank.

I went to the beach and had my girlfriend do topoffs for almost a month. Nothing bad happened at all. Maybe I was lucky. She even bought me more fishfood and freed some xenia stalks that got caught in a powerhead.

I'm sorry to hear about your tank. That really sucks.
As far as spending your money to get going again, I can't see what the resistance from your parents is all about. I have a 13 year old son who couldn't save a dollar if his life depended on it. All the money he gets goes into his tank(s). Personally, that's fine with me, as I'd much rather have him spend it on that then the many other vices that are out there in his enviroment.
These of course are all my personal opinions. Everybody's circumstances are different.

Thanks guys for the kind words.... yeah im only 14 and spend every cent i have on my tank...i have to buy my own clothes and stuff aswell though so maybe thats why my dads such an ass...i love my parents dearly but my dads a bit too much of a money miser.... and funkyman i agree...i look about 17 so i hang out with an older crowd and there are many bad things people with money can buy... but next time i'll talk to them about the importance of SALT WATER in a SALTWATER tank...
They made an honest mistake and im partially to blame aswell...i gave realy brief instructions becuase i was trying out for the first team basketball team the day after that so i had to practise really hard being so young... and to all you out there who also lost tank, my hearts with you guys... thanks again guys...i feel much better now...
