Light Confusion. Please Help!

The only thing about starting a 125 gallon reef that I am still confused about is what lighting I need. I have been told to go with 3 250watt metal halides, 4 96 watt actinics, and some moonlights if I want them (which I do). Is this set up ok? I am planning on having an anenome and a clam so I will need stong lighting. However if I can I would like to avoid the metal halides because my tank will have a glass cover and I do NOT want my tank to overheat. The metal halides are also very expensive. Can anyone please help me out? I am tired of being confused about this. :help:

The setup you have posted would be great for anything you wanted to grow. I would go with everything but the MH first. Then you can pick up a 250w MH retro kit for 253 from a undisclosed site. Just pick them up one at a time and add them untill you get it all just if you buy a coral etc. place it under the MH. Your tank will look a little funny at first but. Buy so you dont have to up grade later and waste money

Can you explain what exactly the 250w MH kit is? I know what all that stands for but how are they built and what do they look like? Thanks for the fast response!

I thought I explained all of this to you the other day. Maybe someone else. But you should not use glass covers over your tank. Reguardless of the light you are useing. The glass covers hold the heat in your tank. You will have other thing producing heat in your tank other than just your lights. Your powerheads, pumps, filters. If it has a motor to run it, and water flows over or around it. It will warm up your water. It is just that simple. Think of your tank as a living thing. Because basically that is exactly what it is. And like all living things, It naturally does things to take care of itself. Whether you like it or not. Most people want the keep the glass tops on thier tanks to
1. Keep fish from jumping out of the tank, which is easily fixed with eggcrate.
2. To keep the water from evaporating so quickly. This will cause big problems. Your tank evaporates, (sweats) to rid itself up built up gases, and heat. Holding them in your tank can throw the tank off balance. Just like you, if on a hot summers day, if your body can not sweat to release heat your body will overheat, That is when you develope heat stress, or even worse heat stroke. I am not saying your tank will suffer from heat stroke. But it is the same idea. Never, Never use glass tops on a saltwater tank. The glass tops or normally made at the factory that makes these tanks and then ship them out the the pet stores like *****, or Petsmart. They are intended to be used for freshwater fish. That is also way they do not come reef ready. If you ever order a reef ready tank, (these are designed for and intended for use with saltwater) these do not come with tops on the tank at all. That is because they know that you are not suppose to use glass, or acrylic tops on a saltwater tank.

Mandarin W, yes you did explain a lot of this to be just the other day and it all helped alot. There were just a few more things I wanted to clear up. So with that MH kit do you need to have a canopy on your tank alredy or does it just go directly on top of your tank and serve as a canopy and a lighting fixture? Do they make one with 3 250w bulbs? Also how would I hook up actinics and a couple moonlights to one of those? Would I need a completely seperate fixture? Where can I buy a 3X250 MH kit and how much do they go for? Can you hook a timer up to them?

Out of respect for SWF owner's, let's not try to refer folks to other sites.

for a retro kit yes you will need a canopy. But you can also do pendants if you dont want a canopy.
And yes I would always use a timer on your lights so nobody forgets to turn them off

hate to be the bearer of bad news lol but some people have fish with jumpin needs.. i have a glass cover. and a diamond goby with a death wish....and all tanks ive see that are reef ready have had covers..anyways some people dont like them some people do..having a cover does tend to let the evaporation happen more..but monitoring it would solve that problem

And I also hate the be the bearer of bad news. LOL. But If you buy a Reef Ready tank for a company, it will not come with glass covers unless you order the seprately. Glass covers are not intended for Saltwater tank. As far as wanting to keep your fish that tend to jump from the tank. That is exactly why we use eggcrate. It covers the top of the tank so fish can not jump out. and is open enough to let the tank do what it needs to do. If you search this site. you will see that probably no less that a 1000 times people are told over and over again, do not use glass covers over the tank. And in the last three months, it was recomended to use eggcrate at least 100 times.
I have been in this hobby for over 5 years. I belong of a local reef club with probley at least 200 people. I have seen no less than 100 different reef tank. And the only one I have seen glass covers on, belong to new hobbist that do not know any better. I had glass covers on my reef ready tank 5 years ago. It did not come with them. I was told that if I wanted glass covers for my tank, they could order them and it would cost me an extra $45.00. But they are not standard.

lol. thanks
So are those the prices just for 1 bulb? Which one do you reccomend? I have read that the Iwasaki 250w 6500K setup is good.

It is for the complete setup reflector, icecap ballast, bulb, socket and most wireing. I like the 14k hamilton. But that is just my pref.
Here is what the 14K Hamiltons look like

PC's aren't going to be enough for an anenome or a clam for that matter....why not just do it from the start and go with the MH........A MH covers a 2x2 area how long is your tank? Hey Quads what type of reflectors are you running?
Another side note, there isn't any need for running glass covers and you'll see shortly that it will create issues....It will hold and trap heat, reduces gases exchange at the surface that is needed......It will also prevent evaporation which is important as well.
