can i use light ballasts for a hardware store for better light for my tank or is it not the same as tank lighting

If it is a regular output ballast..you can use it..but you should get bulbs specifically for marine aquaria use...normal "shop" lights are a lower kelvin and usually encompass the reds of the sprectrum...

Depends on what type of light bulbs ur planning of using it for, some lights will work on some ballast and some won't. Like T5 bulbs won't work on a ballast made for T8's. Check the markings on the ballast to see what type of light bulb you can use it for. I've heard people using lights from the hardware store, mostly use for FO tank. You can maybe also find actinic blue, and full spectrum lights at some stores. Use only 5500K or more, use less you'll get algae.
