What is the difference between a 150w PC light and a 150w MH light? Do they both do the same thing?

No, definitely not. A 150 watt PC light is much dimmer than a 150 watt metal halide light.

every light is defferent. there is the PC which are dimmer lights (like stated above) the MH which are really bright lights and the t5 which are great lights as well and are bright. there are also the new solona i think its called which are LED lights. those say to be like MH. i really never really had any experience nor has my LFS. and each light is for different needs.

Power compacts are also on the way out, as T5HO are cheaper to run and much more effective. T5s are close to MH but will not give the shimmer effect and not as effective on tanks deeper than 18 ".
T5's however run much cooler tham MH which to me is the way to go, especially if your tank has a canopy. Without a good chiller I would not attempt to use MH lamps.
For a 72" long tank a T5 fixture will cost you about $600-$700 where as MH will be $1000.oo and up
