lighting for a 55

hi all thanks in advance for any and all help want to convert ny 55 salt fowlr to a reef mainly i want to keep clams i know i want to use mh lighting not sure how much(150 or 250) and a brand name would also be helpful thanks

do you have a wooden canopy or do you want a unit. Either way, I wouldnt do any more then 2x 150 and some actinics.

When I had my 55 I had 2x175w metal halides which was plenty. Also make sure you get electronic ballasts and not magnetic ballast.

Personally I would get at least two 175 watt and ultimately two 250 watt. I have a Giessemann 150 MH on a 29 and feel that is borderline for a SPS tank. Your 55 is two inches deeper than my 29. If clams are your goal I would consider 2x250 watts. But then I am not paying your electric bill.

no i don't have a canopy but i do have a 40 bredder which is 36lx18wx17h would it be okay for clams and if so what about lighting on it thanks again

I would use the 40 over the 55 any day. However that is just my opinion. A pair of 150W halides would work well on that tank. Supplement with a couple T5 or VHOs to correct the color to your liking.
