Lighting-I don't know where to start.....

So, i'm pretty new to this hobby, have a 55 gallon tank with about 70 lbs of live rock, wet/dry filter, protein skimmer and 5 fish right now (2 Percs, royal gramma, flame angel, lawnmower blennie) plus a cleaner shrimp.
What I have right now is the lighting that came with my 'package' and i'd like to upgrade it, but I really don't know where to begin. I have 2 flourescents, and I really don't know much more about them than that. I'd like to get some leather corals in my tank, and i'd like it to look more alive/vibrant, but I don't even know where to begin.
let's say I wanted to spend 2-300 bucks, what should I look for? What do I need to measure? Do I need a new cover? Do I take the cover off completely?
As you can see, i'm lost in the desert, looking for some decent lights. Any suggestions?
Many thanks for any help.

if you really want good lighting, metal halide and t5ho with individual reflectors is where youd want to start. for 350 bucks including shipping, you can get a Nova Extreme Pro 6x54w T5HO. You can keep clams, SPS, basically anything. The bulbs arent the best, but you can get some really good bulbs for about 140 including shipping.. the fixture will come with bulbs
most lighting fixtures will have a length, your tank should be 48" long, so look for fixtures in that range.
