hey all.
i will be upgrading from a 10 gallon nano reef to a 29 gallon reef in a couple of months and am in the process of deciding what lighting system to buy.
in the 10 gallon i'm currently stocking zoos, button polyps, yellow polyps, GSP, xenia, frogspawn, and a green brain under a 96 watt power quad. i have an interest in SPS and clams but will probably wait until i can afford MH lighting to attempt keeping them.
so for now i'd like to stay with PC lighting if possible, and i think i've narrowed it down to 2 different PC fixtures from Current USA:
ORBIT 30 inch with 65w daylight and 65w antic (130w)
or
ORBIT 36 inch with 96w daylight and 96w antic (192w)
obviously if the decision was based solely on wattage i would go for the higher but i'm envisioning that the 36" light on top of the 30" long tank will have about 3" of fixture hanging off either side of the tank (assuming that the legs will adjust to fit to 30 inches).
so i guess that's my deciding factor. will the 36" fixture be too long and is the 192 watts of lighting overkill for softies and LPS in a 29 gallon? if so, i'll go with the 130w fixture.
if anyone has either of these fixtures and can relay their experiences i would be most appreciative.
thanks!

From what I have read, you should have between 2-5 watts/gallon of light. So, based on this formula the 2x65 should be an OK choice (and will cost you less than the 2x96!!!)
However, if you are going to have corals that are light hungry and want to propogate them, you may want to go for the overkill.

the 192w is the way i would go. place all ur soft polyps on the bottom so they dont get burnt.u could probly keep an anemone too

thanks for the responses!
i really don't have an issue spending the extra $50 for the higher wattage fixture and obviously like the idea of having a wider coral selection.
i guess my main concern is an aestetic one. i would like to be sure that the longer fixture will fit and look ok before i order it.
any add'l advice would be great!

I have a 30" Orbit system and the legs at adjustable. The 36" will fit your 30" tank. You will just have some overhang.

Is there anyone out there with this setup a 36" fixture on a 30" tank i am thinking the same thing he is and dont mind the extra cash i would have to pay but i wanna know what it would look like please if anyone has a picture to show this i would really appreciate this! thanks jon
