Lighting requirements???

I am working on my first venture into saltwater and so far everything is going well. I have a 60 gallon. What I want to know is what is the minimum (as in cheapest.....) amount of lighting I can have before putting in live rock and/or some corals and invertebrates? I now have a 48 inch 10,000 with a 48 inch actinic but I get mixed answers on whether this is enough lighting and I don't want to pay the big $$$ for live rock only to have it die off due to bad lighting (like I said, I'm cheap...)

They are not the VHOs. As for right now, I'm really only worried about if LR will be OK under this lighting. Invertebrates I am going to wait on until I upgrade (most likely to metal hallides).
Thanks for your help.

If you're cheap then maybe this isn't the hobby for you. :D
jk. Lot's of things can be done inexpensively.
To answer your question, it all depends on what type of corals you want. I would think your current lighting is fine for just adding live rock. I had a buddy who had a 55 gallon with two 30 watt bulbs over it. He had some live rock and had an aptaisa or two sprout up and some grape algae. But that's about it. But the live rock didn't 'die' off.
imo, I would go ahead and shell out some money now and get a retrofit vho kit. You can find 4 48" bulb, 440 watt kits for around $130 I believe. That includes everything except the bulbs. That seems like a lot now but believe me, you'll be happy you have it if you get into this hobby and start to see cool corals you want to add to your tank. With 440 watts over a 60 you can have just about anything.
If you're a real diyer then get a workhorse ballast for around $40 and hook that up with a couple of vho bulbs. 220 watts of lighting for about $55 after you buy the endcaps and wire.
Also, a 48" vho bulb puts out 110 watts of light compared to a no 48" bulb which puts out only 40 watts. But I've found that they cost almost the same! Only a few dollars difference. I can get vho bulbs cheaper on the internet than no bulbs in local pet stores!
Remember this. It's cheaper to go ahead and get good lighting than buying corals and trying to keep them under poor lighting only to have them die. After which you'll probably upgrade to better lighting anyways.

Just one think to add...
I could not fit 48" vho bulbs in my 48" canopy so I had to go with 46.5" bulbs....
You can certainly have LR under that NO light w/o a problem...
Later you can pick up a Icecap 660 ballast and harness on ---- and get some bulbs and end caps...my lighting set up cost $300 even....but I did the wiring and installed them in the canopy myself...its not too hard to do really...with 440watts of vho over a 60g you can do almost anything in my opinion...except for some sps...

hey kip what kinda corals do you keep in your tank??? any sps or a clam???
I had 3 75watt lights on a 430 ballast over my 29g and kept a maxima clam w/o a problem....it even grew about a half an inch...I had it for about 6 months before I sold it...
I am certain that 225 watts over a 29g is the same as 440watts over a 60g...it works out about the same...

Live rock will do fine with normal output light. It's the corals that need the intensity, so as far as rock performing it's biological purpose light is not a big issue. With your current light you could get some mushrooms which look very nice. I would get some mushroom rocks or indivisuals and get the hang of things with those, and then when you can afford $200.00 plus bucks for some VHO's or Power Compacts you can get a good set up and get some nice light demanding corals. A friend of mine has a mushroom tank and it looks very nice and colorful. He has about 10 different colors of mushrooms.
if you got a 2-110Watt VHO setup with 10K bulbs or a 2-96Watt Power compact setup and ran your Normal Outputs with Actinics you could keep a very wide variety of corals.
