lighting trouble

I recently bought a new 24" VHO bulb for my tank and it will not light up, it sputters almost, lights on the ends and flickers. I know the ballasts are ok because I have other bulbs that will work in that spot, but for some reason this one won't. Do I just have a bad bulb or am I missing something? Any help would be great.

I think you answered your own question. Are the other bulbs that work VHO? If so, yes, you have a bad bulb.

The other that does work is a VHO. The only thing that is making me question it is that I have another bulb that is doing the same thing, one that I just bought. Just thought it would be tough to buy two bad bulbs right in a row. Thanks.
