ordered new lighting for 125g. 2 x 250W HQI (Double Ended) MH Retrofit Reflector. is there a certain height the lights have to be from the glass tops?

I'd take the glass tops off myself. What height you put them at is subjective, but most people run about 8-10 inches off the water.

If you've got a 6' tank you're going to have dark spots. MH is good for about 2 foot, so you may need to invest in another bulb in there. I put four in over my 125

alot of people not using glass tops? i thought about leaving the other two, 4 square pin bulbs (96w 36in i think).....bad idea or pointless to have them now? also, i have a few corals, open brain, few mushrooms, and xmas tree. they are sitting about middle of tank. do i need to lower them down some more?
