How long should I leave on the lights? Also if they are on for to long will that cause problems with algae? I have the bacteria starting to darken up my sand. I also added a couple fish to it and cleaner shrimp...

im assuming u have cycled..wat type of lighting do u have? i keep mine on from 9am-8pm

9-12 hours is usually plenty.

In my most successful reef (155 gallon display) I had dark for 12 hours, low lights (VHO actinics) for 12 hours, medium lights for 8 hours (VHO Daylight + actinics), and intense lighting for 2 hours (250 watt DE MH + VHO Daylights + VHO Actinics).
The actual energy consumption for lighting was 0 watts (12 hours), 480 watts (3 hours), 960 watts (2 hours), 1710 watts (2 hours), 960 watts (2 hours), 480 watts (3 hours).
