I ran a 10gal nano reef with 3 flouresents for about 2 years. The tank was doing amazing, but as yu will soon find out, you are going to want a bigger tank. I had 2 atinic 15 watt bulbs and 1 white bulb. If you go to a hardware store, you can buy under the cabinet fixtures for about 8 dollars a piece. Take the plastic cover off, and you can line them up in a homemade cabinet. Mince was 5 inches above the water line. The depth of the 3rd fixture will extend beyond the back of the tank, so I built extensions which went from the top of the canopy to the bottom of the tank and increased the depth of the tank about 4 inches. Basically the canopy looks like an upside down L which, fits snug up against the back and top of the tank itself if you are looking at the side glass. I was even abole to run a full size skimmer in the back (made for 75 gallon) by building a platform so that the return flow was elevated above the top of the tank. You can also build a small encaseing with an egg crate bottom, and cut a media sponge to put inside, and if you hang over the edge of the tank and have the return flow from the skimmer going into that, you wont blast your tank with air bubbles. It took me some time to figure out the design, but it was effective. Then all you have to do is put you skimmer pump inside the actual tank attached to the glass and run the tubing over the top and into the skimmer imput. I'm probably going on and on, but after having a 45 gal going for a while, I wish I still had my 10. It was a lot of fun!
