I recently replaced my MH/T5 combo lighting unit on my 175 bow front at work with the Aqua Illuminations Sol system. I looked into DIY and have done many DIY projects. I decided to pay the extra money for the support AI gives, the interchangeability of the pods moving forward with new technology and especially the controller that they sell with their system. The controller not only gives you excellent flexibility in the combination of how much light you get from your 'white' and 'blue' combination but also allows for some 'cool' effects like random lightning storms and the ability of the lighting to mimic the lunar cycle at night.
In my decision the support, warranty and controller did cost roughly $600-700 more dollars than a DIY system that does not have a controller, but it was quite worth it to me.
Wango is right about the fact that the technology is changing almost daily with new systems coming on board all the time. I would check out their web site as they have a couple newer systems coming out soon that allow for tremendous lighting flexibilty.

I was looking at those lights. They are pretty great but the only person
that sells them near me is about 4 hours away. I dont see a price for them
either. They doo look like some of the best i have seen so far. I like how
you can go back and add or take away as you tank changes.
Thanks

No stores in my area stock the AI Sols either. I visited the AI website and followed a link to ReefGeek and purchased them from them.

When you say 600 is that just for the one piece.
Reef Geek has them for $529/unit and about $90 for the controller. Mounting Rails about $50. They threw in free shipping since I bought a package of three units, controller and rails. Not cheap, but I paid a similar amount and have to replace bulbs for an "orbit" MH/T5 combo unit.
DIY is definately cheaper, whether it be traditional lighting or LEDs

I completely %200 agree with the above statement, all it requires to DIY LEDs is some soldering skill.
I can work out a lot of it but it takes time.

Im sure i can handle a DIY project. I would need to know
the difference before hand. As a few 100 bucks just isn't enough
to make a difference to me. The part I'm having trouble with
would be the types of lights. (mainly meaning colors). also
what wattage.
Thanks

Okay, 3W LEDs, a mix of about 2:1 Royal Blue to Cool White, run them at 700mA or less (increases life)
You can also add in neutral white for a more red spectrum.
Use only Cree 3W LEDs. They are some of the best on the market, the $1.50 chinese ones suck.
