I just recieved a MH unit when a friend sold me his tank (wife got made at the $$$ he spent). I am going to plug it in to a multi outlet surge protector, but not sure if there are kinds better for our tanks. Most of the better ones are for electronics. I want to make sure the unit shuts down should there be a problem. Any suggestions?

I guess i would make sure you have all the plugs from your pumps plugged into a GFI outlit, so if you have any problems to where you get any water near them it will trip the circut, instead of burning down the house, surge protectors are more for computers to protect them from power surges in storms.

Agreed with Mlpsman, surge protectors are always good to use as the first line of defense, but you should have a gfci plug. I had an electrician install one when he came to do other work. Much safer.
Also make sure plugs/protectors are after a "loop" in the wire...in other words, dont have protectors laying on the floor. Mount it to the wall or something so if water runs down the wires, it will drip off the cord onto the floor and not into the plugs.
