SPS or LPS & Softies?
I am a big fan of MH. I have a 400 Watt MH on my 54 Corner. If you are going with LPS & Softies, then there is no need to go MH.
HO T5s will handle anything, but you don't get those nice shimmer lines without MH.

It is really just personal preference. MH or HO T5......take your pick.

i still havent learned all the lingo yet. i have an anenome, some xenia, zoos, mushrooms etc. i want to have a lot of different types of coral, eventually. where do i get good lights?

Hagen Glo T5 HO Lighting System - Double - 48
Hagen Power GLO High Output T5 Fluorescent Bulbs
would this work for it?

In order for your anemone to live and be happy you definitely need stronger lights. I've never heard of Hagen so can't say anything about them, but you may want to look into Coralife fixtures. they have many different types.
I thought you took the anemone back a few weeks ago?

I saw the system that you mentioned... all I can say is you get what you pay for and when it comes to lights, you don't want to cut corners.

i had a friend with an established tank "babysitting" it until my tank cycled. it did and her tanks levels went haywire so i took it back. where is the best place to get the best type of lights? and what kind is the best. the hagen is all i could find thats t5 ho around where i live. i wouldnt know where to begin looking online or for what.

I have the same tank as you. I upgraded 3 times until I ended up with Metal Halides. The reason, I want to keep anything I want and pc's won't do that. T5's are good to but unless you hang them, I didn't find any that would fit my tank. I have the Sunpod 2x250 MH setup with 9 white and 9 blue lunar lights. The tank lighting is unbelievable (shimmer effect) and it fits on the tank 48x81/4x4h. They ran about $575 delivered to my front door. The sunpod is made by current.

What I did to was to go to my LFS with the price from where I told you and see if they would beat the online price. They did and that is why I paid what I did.

Aqua Medic Ocean Light T5/Metal Halide Combo - 48 inch 2 x 250 Watt MH + 2 x 54 Watt T5 Fixture - Black
is this any good, a friend of a friend is selling it for $400 the bulbs are 2months old.

That would be a great light, but how are you going to mount? Hang or is it on legs? The problem I had with the same tank is that you only have 12" to work with unless you hang them from the ceiling. Most of those type of lights are 15" or more. Then you would have to modify and it wouldn't look very clean. My tank is in my livingroom, not a fishroom, so I wanted it to look nice and clean (where the light setup looks like it was made for the tank). Once again, if you like that setup and the bulbs and fixture aren't that old and it would look good over or on your tank, then I would go for it.

Good point! Bow front is a difficult shape for light fixtures unless you hang the fixture from ceiling or have a shelf on the wall to hang it down from. For example my 55 was only 13 inch wide and the 48 inch MH fixture was too wide. Fits perfectly on my 75. PC lights are made for more narrow systems.

im not sure yet. he has the legs for it but i have room to hang it i think ill just see how things go once i get it here. either way its not a problem.
