lion dies

Well my fuzzy dwar lionfish is not gone to fish heaven......

The eye of the fish popped today and there was a huge hole there, its eye was completely gone. The fish was gasping and at the bottom shaking also. So this has been a learning curve no doubt. I think my water quality might have had something to do with it and also a much bigger tank is definaltey needed.
So to all you lionfish keepers, make sure these fish have pristine water conditions...

I won't be getting another one, but enjoyed the one I had for the short 6 months that I did have it.

Thanks all, I will not be getting another lionfish. There are three things I have had in this tank now and will not get again. Purple Pincushion Urchin, Chocolate Chip Star, Dwarf Lionfish. They need a much bigger tank, for the first two they need a tank with "natural" foods for them and the lionfish IMO needs a tank of at least 50 gal to maintain a nice water balance.
I sure loved having the lion and wished I still had it but that is how this hobby goes sometimes. Maybe I can help other by the mistakes I have made......

As for fish I have:
1 Coral Beauty Angel
1 White Strip Maroon Clown
1 Yellowtail Blue Damsel (this fish has been with me from the start)..

If I can I would not mind "one" small colorful fish to this tank if I can:
Firefish
Clown Goby
Yellow Watchman Goby
Bi-Color Blenny
Any suggestions?

what size tank do you have? im curious because your maroon will get over 5 inches at adulthood but knowing what size will help determine what may be best choice for a new fish

Yellow Watchman Gobies tend to be hiders; I only see mine during feedings. And he never leaves his hiding area, so I have to make sure some food drops to him - otherwise he'd never eat.
Firefish are cool, but timid and the Maroon might target it.
A Purple Pseudochromis are nice looking and can stand up to anything; they're on the mean side.
I've always loved a Bicolor Blenny. I've had two and both just find a few spots in the tank they like and spend all day hopping from one to the next, always watching the goings on. Very cool fish!

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate input on fish that I might consider and someone else as your self has experience with. I did have a very nice Bi-Color blenny for a short time, but I know that my lion had nice snack with him as I could not find him anywhere.
I think after all the advice given I will go with another Bi-Color. I loved mine for the short time and it was always out and about the tank too.

Sorry for the loss of your fish... I lost my blue hippo tang today after having it for a year... anyways... I have a bicolor blenny in my tank at work and absolutely love that little fish!! I also have a puple fire fish, beautiful fish but it stays hidden most of the time. I recommend the bicolor blenny. Can't wait to see what you get!!

debbie i too had a 25 with a dwarf lion in it and it do died. they r sensitive to water parameters changing in the slightest. i have upgraded to a 30 gallon and only keep EASY to care for fish. i have had a purple psudochomtris (spelling) for 5 years and a large 4 inch maroon clown for 2 years along with a yellow tail damsel for 2 years. my new peeps r a yellow clown goby and firefish goby. all easy going fish, all easy to care for and beautiful to watch. all eating like pigs to. for me believe it or not i use tap water, dont do water changes but every six months and have had no probs. im sure im not the only one who does this , and believe it or not the only thing iv lost in this tank in five years is a long tentacle anenome do to lighting restraints. my chocolate chip star never complains and he is the most finiky creature in there. going on 2 years now.

i double that on the purple psuedo they r practilly bullet proof. when i got my tank from my brother a couple years ago he let it go bad . half the water was evaporated from the tank. the gravity was off the scale. the purple psuedo swam like it was nothing. he and zebra hermitt live to this day

Thanks for the reply. It is just such a bummer when you loose a fish you really like. But I am learning along the way too. I to had a CC star and a Pincushion urchin. My motto on those two things is, "leave them in the ocean". They are just to hard to keep alive for any length of time and do we really know what they eat in the ocean?
Anyhow, I don't have a whole lot of choice here for fish. I want to keep it realativley peaceful too. So I think the dottyback's as beautiful as they are I will just leave them out. If I had a bigger tank I would give one a try.
So I lean towards the Clown Goby or Bi-Color blenny. I did have a bi-color blenny for a short time till my lion had dinner. I was not happy there either.

I can only get one fish and my LFS said that one clown goby will hide all the time. I want something to be out and about not hiding. I have ordered a bi-color blenny but I can change I know that. I will have to think about this.

yeah i lost a lion pretty much the same way you lost yours. its shitty. mine was well over 8 inches and the only reason he died is because i didnt do a good job with the water quality. i learned a TON since then though after hours of research. hopefully my 125 wont crash.
