Hello, ive purchased a lionfish about a month ago and to this day all hes eaten has been mysis. Before i bought it i did my research and found that you dont want to feed them feeder fish, which i havent. I have try silversides, scallops, shrimp with no success. I feed the rest of the fish mysis so when that happens he begins to eat them. Would this be sufficient to sustain it or do i have to really try harder at feeding him other things? Thank you in advance.

Lions need more then just mysis but if thats what hes eating right now they make pretty large mysis I'd try getting some of those. Also try a feeding stick with a silverside on it. They like live food so you have to try and make seem alive. You could not try feeding him for a couple weeks then try a silverside or some shrimp. Took awhile for me to get mine to not eat live food. How big is he???

In the long run, yes it is detrimental to his health to just eat one specific food. A major problem with lionfish is lockjaw setting in because of nutritional deficiency caused by exactly your type of problem. Sadly lockjaw is usually almost always fatal. You will definitely need to get him to eat more then mysis in order for him to be a healthy and long lived fish. You can try multiple things from, as the person above said, making the food seem more alive and starving him for a time to see how he responds, trying multiple food types, to soaking the mysis in selcon and/or vitachem to boost the nutritional intake of the food. Also not all live foods are bad. Ghost feeder shrimp seem to be a good, safe, viable choice. You could opt to buy them as you need them, or setup a small breeding tank. A breeding tank would be more beneficial as you can feed the shrimp to increase their nutritional value. He would much rather hunt for the shrimp; however it really doesn't matter how he gets the proper nutritonal intake, all that matters is that he is, in fact, getting it.
Best of Luck with your Lion

I would like to add to what chain said you should always soak your food in vitamins in my IMO. As for ghost shrimp they are freshwater so don't feed him them for a long period of time. When he gets a little bigger he my go after some larger foods. Hang in there it my take alittle but id def start with not feeding him for two weeks then try a silverside.
